BETHELEHEM ABIYE (2024)

School: Amherst College

As the daughter of Ethiopian immigrants, the value of education has never gone unbeknownst to me. Having a diverse cultural perspective has opened my eyes to the reality that education is not only a privilege but a powerful one to hold. To fulfill my goals of pursuing higher education, I will be attending Amherst College to study psychology after which I will obtain a Master’s degree & Psy.D in neuropsychology in order to become a licensed neuropsychologist. I hold immense gratitude for the Annie Lewis Scholarship Fund as this scholarship is the main reason I was able to attend a highly ranked out-of-state college that would otherwise not be feasible to pay for without incurring massive debt. Because of this scholarship, I do not have to sacrifice the quality of education I will be receiving but instead am able to gain invaluable connections at institutions that will allow me to build success for my future career where I plan on making a difference in the field of cross-cultural neuropsychology to break barriers on the stigma surrounding mental health.

From being born and growing up in a small town in Mexico, to moving to the U.S at a young age and assimilating to a new environment and norms, all the challenges I’ve faced have helped me cultivate a rich sense of culture and commitment to my communities. These challenges have helped develop my goals and passions to achieve a degree in nursing where I will continue to aid and give back to the communities that have not only helped me, but others as well. The Annie Lewis Scholarship has provided me the opportunity to pursue my education by minimizing the fears and concerns of the financial endeavors that come from university. The value of this scholarship is worth more than just aiding in the costs of college, but an opportunity to pay this kindness forward to other communities the same way that mine has. I am grateful for this opportunity, thank you!

Coming from a low income family, the idea of attending college was always seen as something unreachable and something impossible. Thanks to my grandparents’ sacrifices and my education at University High School, I will be the first in my family to attend college in the Fall. I intend to earn a Bachelors of Science in Biological Sciences with a concentration in Biomedical Sciences and later on go to medical school to get my MD in Anesthesiology. I would like to thank the Annie Lewis Scholarship Fund for acknowledging my achievements and providing me with aid for textbooks and technological supplies, but most of all I would like to thank the foundation for believing in my dreams and believing in me!

Because my Tolleson community has made such a profound impact on my life, I realized a dream of studying political science and law in order to one day become a constitutional lawyer who is able to serve the community. The Annie Lewis Scholarship will allow me to afford the cost of attending Northern Arizona University, and in doing so, this scholarship furthers my dream of pursuing social justice for minority groups like the LGBTQ+ and Hispanic communities. I am grateful for my family for allowing me to pursue higher education, and I am thankful to this scholarship foundation for believing in the future changes that I can make in the political and legal worlds. Living in the same small Arizona community for all my life thus far, I have had the privilege of building rich connections with those who have shaped my growth and inspired my academic motivations. I intend to earn a degree at Arizona State University, staying close to the people and home that I cherish, and I will attain a medicine-related degree in preparation for entrance into a dental program. My college journey represents the creation of a bridge between my primary goal of establishing my own dentistry practice and my dream to expand Arizonan's dental access. The Annie Lewis Scholarship Fund has granted me an honor through their scholarship. This award will be placed towards my current pursuit of education at ASU, which is an opportunity I am forever grateful for.

Throughout my life, I have witnessed my parents’ strong determination to give me a chance at a better future. They taught me how to persevere despite hardship, care for others, and be appreciative of our own failures and successes. They continue to believe in me and my dreams. I plan to attend a university to further my education with psychiatry as the end in mind; I hope to encourage mental health awareness and help individuals gain a better understanding of themselves. The Annie Lewis Scholarship has helped me fulfill my dream of attending Harvard University to study Biology. As Peruvian immigrants, my parents put a heavy emphasis on obtaining the best education possible. They were incredibly proud of my college acceptance, and it made them even happier that the Annie Lewis Scholarship would cover a portion of the cost of attendance. While I continue on my journey of becoming a physician, the scholarship has provided the invaluable service of limiting financial obstacles.

Going to college means fulfilling the hard work that my family has always exhibited. As immigrants, they channeled that intelligence in their labor and providing for the family, and I am now able to use that same hard work in my education through this scholarship. Receiving the Annie Lewis Fund helped alleviate remaining expenses and significantly reduced the price of my contribution; Thank you!
